Normalization in a Preschool or Daycare Setting

After the first month has passed in a preschool or daycare, children are becoming more familiar with their educators, friends, classrooms, and daily routines. With September behind us, we continue to help each child feel comfortable, confident, and ready to learn. At Fueling Brains Academy, everyday moments are an important part of your child’s learning and development.

One of our early focuses is normalization, which simply means helping children become comfortable with the rhythm of their day. Knowing what happens next, where things belong, and what to expect during transitions helps children feel secure and settle into their classroom routines.

We also continue to build Executive Function skills, the brain skills children use every day to focus, remember directions, wait for a turn, solve problems, make choices, and adjust when things do not go as planned. Children practice these skills naturally through play, classroom experiences, movement, conversations, and daily routines.

Self regulation and independence are also important at this time of year. Educators help children recognize their feelings, calm their bodies, communicate their needs, and manage transitions. We also encourage those wonderful “I can do it myself!” moments through self help skills such as washing hands, dressing, eating independently, cleaning up, and caring for personal belongings.

Unlike other preschools and daycares in Calgary, Fueling Brains Academy works collaboratively with parents to help continue this learning and development at home. Parents can ask for take-home resources, ideas for activities to do at home, and much more.

Together, these experiences help us better understand and support each child as they grow and learn.
